Welcome to the Republic of The United States of America. Prepare to be conquered.

Sounds sort of funny when you say it aloud, and yet it is to the point. The United States of America, which I so dearly love, is an Empire. We are an Empire of ideas, of culture, of entertainment and philosiphy. And we will conquer you.

We may or may not invade your country. We may or may not remove your leader from power. We may or may not engage your country in an 'economic race' to bankrupt you and collapse your government, but make no mistake, you will be conquered, regardless of how we do it.

Don't hate us. It is the nature of Empires to conquer. You can not blame us any more than you can blame the British for colonizing the world, for the Romans bringing western culture to the known world, or even the endless Chinese dynasties that ruled over the Asiatic for centuries. It is as natural to us as breathing.

You will find something within our culture that will catch your attention, something you will love. The magic of our movies, the freedom of our ideas, the religions we practice or the sports that we win. You will be conquered, and eventually you will love us.

But in case you dont love us, in case you arent crushed by our culture, your traditions and old world ways of doing things thrown to the wind, dont worry, we will eventually fall. All Empires do, its the natural course of things...

Recently the historiaan Niall Ferguson in his magnificent study of American foreign policy, Collosus has made the same argument that US in an empire without a mission. The war against Islam and the Hunttington thesis of Clash of Civilizations are self created delusions of an empire seeking a role in the world.

Meh. America isn't so great. Per capita Australia is tons better at sports and has better weather (no serious "wrath of God"-like tornadoes and earthquakes). We're also less unpopular and more powerful. It's just Australians let Americans think they're great because we don't want them to cry.

America may be an empire seeking glory and power at all costs, but its no match for the stubbornness of the rest of the world.

It may come to pass when the whole world can collectively kiss our "American" patootie!

I thought the whole notion of history was to learn from it's mistakes and not to repeat them? I thought the whole idea behind a "civil society" was to evolve into something better...not to immitate the failures of societies past? But you are right, all empires must fall...the question is what does the world look like when your turn is over? If we only repeat the mistakes of Empires past, have we truly contributed to the advancement of mankind? While other empires may have had some residual positvie effects on the world, most empires have wreaked havoc, death, destruction, and oppression across the globe. If you look at just about every current armed conflict in the world today, it's source can be traced to prior imperialist ambitions. Is this what we intend our children to inherit: endless war for endless peace? The ends do not always justify the means... I leave all of you with the words of the late Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren:

"This concept of 'national defense' cannot be deemed an end in itself, justifying any exercise of...power designed to promote such a goal. Implicit in the term 'national defense' is the notion of defending those values and ideals which set this Nation apart. For almost two centuries, our country has taken singular pride in the democratic ideals in its Constitution...It would be ironic if, in the name of national defense, we would sanction the subversion of...those liberties...which make the defense of the Nation worthwhile."

This deserves the title of "Neo-con Hawk Manifesto." Every empire eventually dies, let's not go out as bellicose hubris...
