Perhaps this is an "October surprise" for many people; President Bush has taken the unlikely step of becoming the first President in history to open the doors of Federal laboratories to embryonic stem cell research. Obviously an attempt to win voters in the upcoming election, President Bush has caused an increase in Federal funding in stem cell research from $0 in 2001 to over $24.8 million dollars in 2004. And there is no cap set on how high this funding could go.

No other President in history, including former President Clinton, has ever approved a single dollar towards embryonic stem cell research, even though the debate has come up often over the past decade in White House circles. In fact, former President Clinton BANNED federal funding of any embryonic stem cell research, as evidenced by Clinton administration nih guidelines for embryonic stem cell funding, section III, articles A-G. Specifically interesting is article A which states in no uncertain terms "Areas of research ineligible for NIH funding include:
A. The derivation of pluripotent stem cells from human embryos;"
Interesting.

While embryonic research is indeed controversial, with President Bush's support the USA now has more open lines of embryonic stem cells to work with than any other country in the world. In addition to embryonic research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded $190 million in "adult" stem-cell research on, for example, cells from bone marrow or placental tissue.

It seems that contrary to many biased claims, the President does indeed support embryonic stem cell research. The funny thing is, this was started in 2001, it just seems like wide spread propoganda has spread lies about the true nature of the Presidents stance on this. October surprise indeed.

May also be a counter attack against Kerry and Edwards who will use Christopher Reeve's death to hammer home the blocked stem cell research by Bush.

Blocked research? I'd like to see where Bush BLOCKED research. He didnt federally fund certain lines of embryonic stem cell research, but I dont remember him actually pushing for a BAN on these these lines, which ARE still open to the private sector.

If I remember, it was the last Democratic President that BLOCKED all embryonic research. I think Democrats are confused...

I know it is not blocked but the Demicans Kerry and Edwards were playing it up like it was though now they lost that ammo for that weapon.

And yet, like so many things, they keep pushing it off as truth...

Sorry,
maybe I was mistaken, but did Bush not address this very issue in the last presidential debate? I though he supports stem cell research, but not embryonic stem cell research. It sounded to me that he was very much against embryonic stem cell research as he believed it destroyed life?

Solitair: Thats the problem, Bush is the ONLY President in history to support embryonic stem cell research, but it has been said so often that he doesnt that people believe it. What he is against is federally funding stem cell research where the stem cells are taken from aborted embryos. This makes alot of sense, as people will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for embryonic stem cells, and it seems the last thing you'd want is a society where a woman can abort her pregnancy and get rich off of it. There are other ways to acquire embryonic stem cells, and Bush supports these. Whats funny is that even though he wont fund a few types of embryonic stem cells, he hasnt BANNED those lines (meaning they would be illegal). It's a complex issue at the very least, which is how people that want the President defeated have been able to say he is against embryonic stem cell research. THE TRUTH is that he is the only President EVER to support embryonic stem cell research, and has been for the past 3 years.

Nope. He has ear-marked some 20 odd million dollars in stem cell research federal grants. Now does that sound like someone who is opposed to stem cell research? What he IS against is the cloning of human embyros for the collection of stem cells or collected from aborted fetus. That would be destroying life to further science. Which I am against also. And as a MS patient, believe me when I say I could very well benefit from the research.

This also just in.

We all thought John Edwards was a lawyer, but apparently we were wrong.

Appears he's actually a televangelist - he was on TV yesterday, speaking to a small crowd about Chris Reeve, promising that if we just elect John Kerry, people will be getting up out of their wheelchairs & walking.

This is not a joke. (Well, OK it is a sick joke; but it's factual - how's that?) Some of the most ridiculous pandering I've ever heard.

Who was John Edwards channeling this time?

I should have been a bit more clear: He was referring to para- & quadriplegics when he said that.

d3adz0mbie,
what other ways are there for obtaining embrionic stem cells?

I had though that Bush does not fund embrionic stem cell research as destruction of the embryo was a given with such stem cells. Also, what are the current legal laws in the states with regards this issue. I thought that it was already illegal to obtain stem cells from embryos?

Paul.
